Vacuum Excavation Sydney
A locate tells you where a service most likely sits. Vacuum excavation proves it. Locate & Map provides vacuum excavation across Sydney Metro so you can expose a live cable, pipe or conduit, confirm its exact position and depth, then backfill and keep working. No mechanical bucket. No hand digging around a charged HV cable. Just a controlled hole where you need one.
Our vacuum excavation crews work alongside our utility locating team, so the dig is guided by a survey rather than a guess. That connection between the locate and the pothole is what turns a marked-up site into verified information you can put on a drawing.

What Vacuum Excavation Is
Vacuum excavation is a non-destructive way to remove soil. High pressure water or compressed air breaks up the ground, and a vacuum unit lifts the spoil straight into a holding tank. The utility underneath is uncovered without a blade or a tooth ever touching it.
The method is used across Sydney on live services because the risk profile is different from mechanical digging. An excavator bucket can shear a 200 mm water main or nick a fibre bundle before the operator feels anything. Water and air will not.
When You Need Vacuum Excavation in Sydney
Post-locating verification
Electromagnetic and radar methods give position and an estimated depth. Where a design sits close to a service, or where a contractor needs to sign off on a clearance, potholing turns that estimate into a measured fact. We expose the asset, record the true depth and offset, and hand the numbers to our drafting team.
Soft digging around live services
Charged electrical cables, gas mains, pressurised water and fibre all sit in the same corridors on Sydney sites. Where excavation has to happen inside the exclusion zone around those assets, vacuum excavation is the safe way to get down to them.
Potholing for design and construction
Designers ask for potholes when a proposed alignment crosses an existing service and the clearance is tight. Vacuum excavation gives them the level, the size and the material of what is already in the ground before the design is locked in.
Trenching, pit and pole holes
Narrow trenches, service pits, sign and pole footings and tree pits can all be cut with a vacuum unit where a machine cannot safely work or cannot fit.
Hydro Excavation and Air Excavation
We select the method to suit the ground and the asset.
Hydro excavation uses pressurised water to cut the soil. It is faster in clay, compacted fill and the tighter soils common across western and south western Sydney. The spoil comes out as slurry, which is carried off site in the tank.
Air excavation uses compressed air instead of water. The spoil stays dry, so it can go straight back into the hole. Dry excavation suits sandy ground, jobs where the excavated material has to be reused, and situations where introducing water is a problem, such as around sensitive electrical assets or inside a building.
Both methods are non-destructive. The difference is the ground, the reinstatement and what the asset owner will accept.
Why Sites Use Locate & Map
Locate & Map runs locating, vacuum excavation, mapping and drafting as one service. That matters because most strikes happen in the gap between those steps. The locate gets done by one crew, the dig by another, and the information never travels between them.
- Locating and excavation coordinated by the same team, so the pothole targets the right spot the first time
- CertLoc-accredited Locator Surveyors on site
- Verified depths and offsets fed straight into our utility mapping and drafting output in 12d and AutoCAD
- Work across residential, commercial, civil and industrial sites
- Sydney Metro coverage from our Five Dock office

How the Job Runs
- Scope. We confirm what needs exposing, how deep, and what asset owners are involved.
- Locate. Our team marks the services using electromagnetic detection and ground penetrating radar before anything is opened up.
- Excavate. The vacuum unit cuts the hole down to the asset, using hydro or air depending on the ground.
- Record. We measure the true depth, size, material and offset of the exposed service.
- Reinstate. The hole is backfilled and made good, and the recorded data goes into your plan set.
