How Electromagnetic Locating Works
Electromagnetic (EM) locating is the primary method for pipes and cables. A conductor carrying a signal produces an electromagnetic field. A receiver reads that field at the surface, which gives us the alignment of the asset and an estimated depth.
Active locating
We apply a signal to the target service, either by clamping onto it, connecting directly at a pit or valve, or inducing a signal into the ground above it. Because we choose the frequency and the target, active locating lets us trace one specific asset through a corridor full of other services. It is the method used when accuracy matters and services are congested.
Passive locating
Passive locating reads the signals already present in the ground, such as mains power frequencies and radio energy re-radiated by long metal conductors. It is a fast sweep. It will tell you that something is there, but it will not tell you what. Passive detection is used as a first pass to check a site for unknown services before active work starts.
Electromagnetic Detection and GPR Together
EM and radar answer different questions, and the best result on a Sydney site usually comes from running both.
EM detection is precise on conductive assets and gives reliable alignment and depth on cables and metal pipes. It cannot see a service that will not carry a signal.
GPR scanning maps reflections in the subsurface instead of relying on metal. It picks up non-conductive assets such as PVC water pipes, clay sewer lines, and fibre in plastic conduit with no tracer wire, along with structures, tanks and voids. Its performance changes with soil type and moisture.
Running EM and GPR side by side gives you the conductive network with high positional confidence, plus the non-metallic assets that EM alone would leave off the plan. Where the design or the risk demands proof rather than probability, we follow up with vacuum excavation to expose the asset and record a measured depth.

Our Process
- Records first. We review the available plans, including BYDA responses, and use them as a starting reference rather than a final answer.
- Site sweep. A passive sweep flags conductive assets and unknowns across the work area.
- Active tracing. We apply a signal to each service and trace it, separating one asset from the next through congested corridors.
- Radar coverage. GPR fills in non-metallic pipes, structures and anomalies that EM cannot see.
- Mark and record. Services are marked on site and captured for mapping, drafting or a utility locating service report to the quality level you need.
